What motivates YOU to come to work each day?
- Helping people hear loved ones?
- Improving patient lives?
- Supporting yourself financially?
- Providing a service people are satisfied with?
Are you ready to improve your ability to meet your goals?
Counselling is a central part of hearing care, and all health care. Until very recently, the hearing care industry has been missing a powerful tool that other healthcare professionals have been using for years – Motivational Interviewing! Instead of telling patients what WE recommend they do, motivational interviewing supports patients to work through their ambivalence about managing and or treating their hearing loss.
Would you like to significantly improve your performance?
In our field, less than 50% of patients who would benefit from treatment proceed with it. This is a staggeringly low statistic. A part of the problem is our top-down approach to providing advice and medical information. How would you like to improve this statistic?
This 6-week program will challenge and hopefully change the way you think about communication in hearing care, while at the same time improving your caseload’s conversion rate and return for credit rate in an ethical, patient-centred manner.
Course Syllabus
Fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing contains six modules that include a video lesson plus readings and assignments. The recommended pace is to complete one module per week.
Week 1: The 4 stages of MI: Engaging, Evoking, Focusing, Planning
Learn the foundational beliefs that make up the MI spirit and the reasoning behind the 4 core activities that take place in this patient centered counseling style.
Week 2: Engaging The Patient
12 Roadblocks to Effective Listening
In this week we learn how to get out of our way, so the patient can express themselves and play an active role in the appointment.
Week 3: Evoking, Building MI Skills & OARS
Learn how to use reflections, open-ended questions, affirmations and summaries to maintain your patient’s motivation and confidence to take action against their hearing loss.
Week 4: Making Recommendations
Learn how and when to provide the patient with information on hearing loss, their hearing ability and hearing aids so it is well received. Discover how to carefully deliver recommendations in a way that does not make the patient become passive in their hearing care.
Week 5: When to Plan and Maintaining Action
How do you know when your patient is ready to take action? When is it safe to transition the conversation toward treatment? Learn the answers to these difficult questions in this week’s module as we explore commitment talk.
Week 6: Tying it all together, Patient Centered Counselling
We wrap up this course by zooming out to look at the big picture: How do we use MI ethically? And what sort of challenges can we expect when implementing this in our practice?
